The management of EFs (Family Businesses) is still associated with an old-fashioned model, forgetting that it is how the overwhelming majority of companies begin their existence. Our mission is very simple: to contribute so that the small Family Businesses of today may become the Heineken, Peugeot or Jerónimo Martins of tomorrow.

To this end, the three biggest challenges that today’s Family Businesses face are: the professionalization of its management, the development of an effective, modern and transparent corporate governance model and, finally, the question of succession from one generation to the next. After the challenges are identified, the Association offers the solutions – a programme of services and training through consultants and experts in the various subjects. In terms of legislative intervention, the Board of the Portuguese Family Businesses has chosen Brussels as the focus of its attention in order to raise the European authorities’ awareness to the specific aspects of Family Businesses that require legislation. At the same time, it would make no sense to be promoting exceptional legislation for a sector that is clearly majority. Although there are no accurate statistics, it is estimated that over 70% of all businesses have family structure and ownership. Thus, the involvement of the Portuguese Family Businesses in the Expert Group that the European Commission has created for advice on Family Businesses shall focus exclusively on unique and differentiating aspects from other business categorisations such as SMBs.

The Portuguese Family Businesses will, in line with other European confederations and employers’ associations, strive to honour Family Heritage Businesses, which, due to the historical vicissitudes of the twentieth century, often had to adopt a stance of discretion – if not defence – in the face of various attacks ranging from confiscatory taxation to compulsory expropriation.

The Family Businesses of the twenty-first century shall be the engine of economic recovery for our economies as they will generate employment and wealth. The Association shall be ever present to assist wherever possible. That is why I am inviting you to join and support the Portuguese Family Businesses.

A: If you have previously set up a “self-directed” individual retirement account (IRA), then you will be able to store alternative assets within your tax-deferred plan, including private placements in venture capital. As with any IRA investment, a self-directed account has built-in, tax-deferred growth– meaning that you would not pay capital gains taxes on the growth of an investment until you are of retirement age and begin to withdraw the funds, presumably at a lower effective tax rate.

A: For individual investors, the SEC tells that an accredited investor is a natural person (as opposed to an organizational entity that may be considered a “legal person”): (1) who owns an individual net worth, or joint net worth with the person’s spouse, that is more than $1 million at the time of investment, excluding the value of the primary residence of such person; OR (2) whose income is more than $200,000 in each of the two most recent years or whose joint income (a spouse included) exceeds $300,000 for those years and has a reasonable expectation of the same income level in the current year.

A: If your primary residence for tax purposes is anywhere but the US, your country determines the minimum income or asset requirement that allows you to participate in venture capital investments.
