Family Businesses in Portugal
How they are characterised
Family businesses are those in which a family has control, may appoint management and some of its members participate and work in the business.
Although there are no accurate statistics, it is estimated that over 70% of all businesses have a family structure and ownership. Thus, the involvement of the Portuguese Family Businesses in the Expert Group that the European Commission has created for advice on Family Businesses shall focus exclusively on unique and differentiating aspects from other business categorisations such as SMBs.
